Ductless mini split cooling units are flexible, cost-efficient and, because they contain no ducts, mean your indoor air will be healthy and clean. But, just like any HVAC system, the unit will work best if it is maintained properly.

Especially during the warmer months, it’s a good idea to add the following maintenance tasks to your weekly to-do list. Keeping your mini split cooling unit functioning correctly will mean it’s more efficient – saving you dollars on bills. These maintenance tasks take no time at all, but will keep your unit working well for years.

  1. Clean and replace filters

This is a simple job which needn’t take more than a couple of minutes. Every week turn off your cooling unit and take out the filters. Remove any collected dust and debris then simply put them back in. Depending on the type of filter used, you will want to buy new ones every 4-12 weeks, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. Give your cooling unit space

Ductless cooling units need at least four feet of unobstructed space around them to work effectively. Large pieces of furniture and wall hangings tend to collect dust, and if they are too close to the unit, this dust can get inside and hinder the unit’s effective functioning. To avoid this, simply move any items which are currently located close to the unit.

  1. Clean the outside of the unit

This is a quick job – on a weekly basis, turn the unit off and use a damp cloth to wipe it down and remove any debris that are beginning to collect. Cleaning out debris as they collect will save you a bigger job down the line and ensure the unit keeps functioning optimally.

  1. Clean the coil and condenser

As above, this is a simple weekly job. Power down the air conditioner and then use a hose to spray the coil and condenser of your unit. Outside debris can get into the unit and stop it from working as well as it should.

  1. Check the pipes

The pipes in your cooling unit connect the condenser on the outside of your property with the air conditioner inside. If these pipes become blocked with any debris or if they are damaged in any way, the unit will have to use more energy to function. Once every few months, take a look at the pipes for any visible wear and tear.
