Remodeling your home can be a very exciting project. Not only can you transform the look and feel of your property, a sophisticated design can add serious value to the eventual resale of your home.

If you’re thinking of starting a home remodeling project, make sure you bear the following do’s and don’ts when you start planning.

DON’T get tunnel vision

One area that many remodeling projects goes wrong is when the home owner becomes too focused on transforming one space in particular. The space itself may look fantastic, but if it doesn’t fit in with the design of the rest of your home, it will simply feel odd and out of place.

DO invest in quality appliances

It’s easy to get caught up in granite surfaces and attractive wooden flooring. That’s all fine, but don’t forget your appliances – these are the things you’ll actually be using every day. Thoroughly research fridges, ovens and washing machines and choose products which you’ll love using for years to come.

DON’T do any DIY you’re not comfortable with

There are some home remodeling jobs which anyone with a practical mind can work out for themselves. On the other hand, certain tasks – such as laying floors, electrical wiring or plastering should be left to the professionals.

DO develop a project plan

At the beginning of your project, create a plan where you outline the dates you need to complete certain stages by, as well as drawing up a budget. By drawing up and following a plan, it’s much more likely your home remodeling will be finished in a reasonable timeframe and to budget.

DON’T make unrealistic budgets

Unless you have experience of carrying out home remodeling, it can be easy to under-budget for your project. It’s a fact that there are very often unexpected costs when remodeling a home – so it’s sensible to set aside at least 20% ‘wriggle room’ to your target budget.

DO think about return on investment

A home remodeling is an excellent opportunity to make some investments in your home which will save – or even make – you money. For example, spending money on double glazing or insulation could lead to big savings on your energy bills down the line. Similarly, think about what changes you can make which will make the property more appealing to buyers when it comes to resale.
